  1. A: On the whole, no. I re-read some McLuhan 
  2. actually in preparation for this interview and I did 
  3. come across what you‚Äôre talking about. There are 
  4. lots of allusions, cryptic allusions to different 
  5. developments in the East, China in particular‚Äîthey 
  6. are really clich√©s. It‚Äôs a complicating factor to 
  7. spend time in the East, because you have to deal 
  8. individually with people rather than take a huge 
  9. sweep. McLuhan talking about the East is rather 
  10. alarmingly like Chairman Mao when he would talk 
  11. about the masses. It‚Äôs more informed by his desire 
  12. to find contrasts than by anything that I 
  13. recognized as being true.
