A: On the whole, no. I re-read some McLuhan
actually in preparation for this interview and I did
come across what you’re talking about. There are
lots of allusions, cryptic allusions to different
developments in the East, China in particular—they
are really clichés. It’s a complicating factor to
spend time in the East, because you have to deal
individually with people rather than take a huge
sweep. McLuhan talking about the East is rather
alarmingly like Chairman Mao when he would talk
about the masses. It’s more informed by his desire
to find contrasts than by anything that I
recognized as being true.
